In my last post I mentioned an article “Waiting out winter: strategies for gardeners” which contained a list of things you can do indoors while waiting for spring. Top of the list was “Start something from seed. One seed tray on a windowsill can make a difference”. Taking this to the next level is the Windowfarm which allows you to grow up to 25 plants with an average size window. This is a hydroponic system which comes in kit form using recycled water bottles. In fact the Windowfarms.org has been around since 2009, but the reason I am writing about it today is because a Mexican Jose de la O has produced a new design. So what can you grow in your windowfarm? From the video you may have noticed various herbs and the harvest of two lettuce leaves and a tomato. If you are starting in the winter you want to choose fast growing crops so that you can see some early results. Terry Kramer writing for the Times-Standard recommends Asian greens. “These tasty, nutritious vegetables are the ultimate fast food when it comes to growing your own; they zoom.
